About the All Party Parliamentary Group
on Arbitrary Detention and Hostage Affairs

The APPG focuses on the arbitrary detention of British citizens abroad, and the taking of British citizens as hostages for leverage in State to State relations. The APPG coordinates parliamentary support for specific cases of British citizens arbitrarily detained abroad and builds on advocacy to follow up on the Foreign Affairs Committee’s report and recommendations to appoint a Director within the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office on Arbitrary Detention.

What is an APPG

All-Party Parliamentary Groups are informal, cross-party groups formed by MPs and Members of the House of Lords who share a common interest in a particular policy area, region or country.

While they are not official parliamentary committees these groups can sometimes be influential because of their non-partisan, bicameral approach to an issue.
